Prompt: Billions of years in the future, space travel is no longer possible. The universe expands faster than light speed. What becomes of mankind?

The world was rent apart in a second- but that was a billion years ago.

Humanity lived in shielded solar systems or shielded ships. These shields kept the universe's now faster than light expansion from badly damaging them. But most humans lived in computers. In these computers, humans lived via virtual reality. They were sped up- millions died and were born in an instant. The rest lived normally. Unfortunately, on most planets there was a luddite or oblivionist movement- sometimes oblivionist religions. And on most planets, these groups won out. Solar systems disappeared in the blink of an eye, though some small ships left the system bubbles on their own. On some ships, there were similar movements, but ships were smaller. They took seconds to drift apart. But then, there was a thoughtvirus deployed. Half of humanity's ships decided it would be cool to experience oblivion. Some brought themselves back. Humanity's fate became closer and closer- some ships fought, in a sort of arms race against the universe's expansion, but what was the point? Another full 3/4th of humanity disappeared. Now only a few thousand ships remained. Time passed, and then the universe's expansion rate hit the limit of the shield protection ability. Four ships managed to develop a new method in time. One took all of the matter it had- about one solar mass- and built its own self-contained solar system. And they lived. Other races maintained their own bubbles galaxies, but again- what was the point? Then, one of the five remaining human groups discovered a method of faster than light travel. They roamed the universe, collecting a full 60% of the old universe in a bubble. Then they figured out how to synthesize matter from energy using stars, and so they did. As the last other groups died out, this miniature universe gained just enough mass. The universe imploded over the course of a full quadrillion years. Just after collapse, something said "Let there be light." And there was.

Awesome. I adhere to the theory that the universe will die in a big freeze if we don't stop it, but we've got plenty of time.
